Rory McIlroy Named Golf Magazine’s Player Of The Year

Rory

In a move that should surprise no one, Golf Magazine has named Rory McIlroy their Player of the Year. This comes one year after claiming the inaugural award. McIlroy has certainly had an amazing year. Early in the season, he won the Honda Classic at PGA National. Tiger Woods eagled the 18th hole, pulling within one shot of McIlroy after starting the day nine shots behind. Most up and comers would fall under the pressure. McIlroy seemed unfazed. He saved par on three of the last five to win both the tournament and the No. 1 ranking. Since then, the comparisons to Tiger just won’t stop. Commentators salivate over the possibility of the two going head to head. Sure, McIlroy had a slump midseason. First, he scored 77-76 to tie for 40th at the Masters. Then he missed the cut for the U.S. Open. Finally, he tied for 60th at the British Open. But he came back to wow everyone with getting the FedEx Cup with wins at the Deutsche Bank and another at the BMW. And let’s not forget his performance at the Ryder Cup. Not only did he have a 3-point week, but he famously slept late and arrived with minutes to spare for his Keegan Bradley. It didn’t show at all, he finished with five straight birdies, beating Bradley soundly. Many sports commentators credit this performance with spurring Europe’s come back in the event. And to top off the year, there were increasing sightings of McIlroy with his girlfriend, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. It should be obvious why Golf Magazine chose Rory. No other player had a year that can compare.

So, what do you think Rockheads? Do you agree that Rory deserves the award? If not, who would you pick? Let me know in the comments!
