Sang-Moon Bae’s One-Of-A-Kind Odyssey Putter & Winning WITB!
Sang-Moon Bae hasn’t won, or even finished in the top-10 since his lone 2013 win, but you wouldn’t have known it on Sunday. The 28-year-old South Korean opened a six stroke lead and hung on to win by two over Steven Bowditch on Sunday at the Frys.com Open. Key to his win were his driver and unique putter. Bae’s win with the Callaway Big Bertha V Series Driver was the sixth for the club worldwide since it was introduced at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in August. The 9-degree club is 45 inches in length with the OptiFit hosel set to minus 1 degree of loft with a neutral directional setting. The shaft is Graphite Design’s MJ7 x-flex.
That Odyssey Damascus Grand putter is where Bae’s bag get really interesting. Other than the man who designed the putter(that would be Austie Rollinson), only 350 people in the world are lucky enough to have one. They were only sold in Japan for $3,500 each. Sang-Moon Bae’s win was the first pro win for the Damascus. The rare flatstick has a #1 shaped head, weighs 349 grams and is constructed entirely from Damascus steel, the same material that was used in Middle Eastern swordmaking. Rollinson was asked why he chose to make the putter of Damascus steel. “Well, it is very cool looking for one,” he said.”Second, we found in testing years ago that the sound of Damascus steel is different from a 303 or 17-4 stainless steel. It has a higher pitch sound to it and sustains just a bit longer. This produces a brighter sound at impact.”
A high tech club that’s made like a sword?! If this Caveman ever finds 4k, I know what I’ll be buyin’!
After he shot 265 yards with a hybrid on the 18th, I had to check which hybrid, sure enough it was 2 hybrid of the xhots that I love. But that putter sure is sweet. although probably not worth the dough just for the sound benefit, I’d be more impressed with the use of the layering for different impact response at different parts of the face.
