Match Play: Luke Donald Wins Without Trailing Once
I don’t think anybody had Luke Donald going the distance and winning the Match Play Championship this weekend, but there he was Sunday with the trophy in his hand! Despite a less-than-remarkable record that included just two wins over the last five years, Donald dominated each round and became the first golfer to go all week without trailing at any point in the competiton. He played only 89 holes in six matches, another record, and led after 81 of them. And get this – he’s the first player to win any golf tournament without ever playing the 18th hole!
His final opponent was Martin Kaymer, who despite the loss walked away smiling since his performance guaranteed him the World #1 Ranking. Other notable names included Matt Kuchar beating Bubba Watson in the consolation match, Phil Mickelson losing to Rickie Fowler and Tiger Woods taking an early exit after only one disappointing round.
Next stop for the PGA Tour is The Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
