First Round of the FedEx Cup: The Barclays

Football is still a few weeks away and baseball’s wildcard race is still a month away from the finish line, it’s prime time for golf’s FedEx Cup playoffs to take the spotlight! The first of four playoff events kicks off this week with The Barclays at Liberty National in New Jersey.

Tiger Woods stands alone at the top of the FedEx Cup standings, but it’s anything but a sure thing. Remember that the number of points for winning each playoff tournament is 2500 – five times the amount for a typical regular season tournament.

He’s had a rough year personally and professionally, but I can’t be alone in thinking Phil Mickelson will have a strong showing here. There’s plenty of other big names for fans to follow, so maybe he can stay under the radar a little and focus on posting a low score for the first few rounds. Plus he’s a member at the hosting course and should feel pretty comfortable out there.

This is the third year for the FedEx Cup… how do you feel about the format? I’m still on the fence, mainly because it’s hard to compare from year-to-year when the PGA keeps making so many changes each year. Eventually I think it’ll be a good thing for golf, but it’s not quite there yet.
