Could Phil Finally Take Tiger’s #1 Spot?
Southpaw Phil Mickelson scored his 3rd Masters title this weekend at Augusta. Not only did this win put him just 1 green jacket behind Tiger Woods and Arnold Palmer, it also rocketed him back to #2 in the world rankings.
With Tiger’s next PGA Tour appearance still undetermined, the gap between his #1 ranking and the rest of the field continues to shrink. Phil’s next scheduled tourney is April 29th at the Quail Hollow Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina, but who knows how he’ll play there. If it’s anything like this last weekend, he may be able to move himself even closer to taking Tiger’s #1 ranking!
What do you think Rock Heads? Does Mickelson finally have what it takes to dethrone Tiger as the Tour’s top player, a position Woods has held for almost five years now?

P.S. Even with a 4th-place finish at Augusta, Tiger’s not doing himself any favors in the world rankings. Turns out the total points are based on a rolling two-year span, and requires golfers to play in 40 events in that time. So thinking back to his less-than-full schedule last year and now the late start to the 2010 season, Tiger may see his point totals drop and be in danger of losing his #1 position

I think it’s very possible that Tiger won’t play anything but the Majors this year. The US Open will probably be his next tournament. I will say that this year’s was one of the BEST Masters I’ve ever watched, what with Fred Couples, Tom Watson, K J Choi and so many in contention down to the last day. I hope some of the other tournaments can get that exciting. Phil may make #1 if the points are based on a certain number of appearances and Tiger doesn’t meet them. Great Masters, Phil!
