Disappointing Season Starts for Rory and Tiger

Tiger Woods Disappointing Start

The two top golfers in the world started their season with unimpressive showings. After all the hype, the money, and camel pictures – let’s be frank, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were awful. After the first day at HSBC Abu Dhabi Championship, McIlroy finished with a 3-over-par 75, eight behing co-leader Jamie Donaldson and Justin Rose. Woods had an underwhelming level-par 72.

In his first showing with his new Nike clubs, Rory McIlroy seemed rather unreliable. He only hit six fairways all day and had a terrible time putting. His 75 is his worst score in 21 career rounds on the Abu Dhabi course. He’ll need a good showing Friday to even make the cut.

“I didn’t drive it well and didn’t putt well today,” McIlroy said. “I’m disappointed. I felt like I could’ve played better and got a better score.”

Woods’ worst moment came when on the 1st hole when he could only drive the ball 150 yards. “It’s tough out there,” he said. “These fairways are tiny to hit, and it seems like every hole is a crosswind hole. The rough is deep enough where it’s tough to get to the green. It’s imperative to get the ball in the fairway.”
