What Is The Best Name In Golf?

Over the years there have been many great names in golf. But Jhonattan Vegas might be the one of the best. I am not talking about skills or records, but strictly about the aesthetic awesomeness of the letters. Johnny Vegas – Pops out of headlines as if on a marquis surrounded by flashing bulbs.

With a name like that, he had better be able to back it up. Not to be confused with the British Comedian, Vegas has started off 2011 making headlines by winning the Bob Hope Classic by shooting a -27, his first event of his rookie season the PGA Tour. This also marks the first time a Venezuelan has won on the Tour and the first time a Rookie has lead the FedEx Cup standings. At his next event, the Farmers Insurance Open, he finished 3rd behind Bubba Watson and Phil Mickleson.

So far we are off to a good start! But even with his name, he is going to need to keep it up if he wants to remain in the spotlight. Even after doing so well, he has already started receiving criticism. Scott Tiernen of Bleacher Report wrote:

One word: agonizing.
Yesterday Jhonattan Vegas couldn’t pull a club slow enough yesterday. Even a 30 handicapper knows what he hits from 100 yards out. Not Vegas. Every shot was like 220 over water from a nasty lie in the rough with a 50 mph wind at his back.
The CBS guys couldn’t cut in late enough. Just when it looked like Vegas was going to hit a shot, he’d back off and ask his caddie to reconfirm the yardage and then switch clubs and so on and so on. Guess that’s what winning the Bob Hope does. Look, Vegas is obviously a good player. But if he’d had to go to the Porta-Potty during the round I wouldn’t have been surprised to see his caddie hustle in after to check his wiping technique.

What do you think Rock Heads? Will Vegas be able to maintain his pace? Will the spotlight get to him? And what is your favorite name in golf?
